History means a lot to people. It has always been so, and it will always be so: through history, people figure out who they are, formulate their identity. All of our national patriotism is based on the proud awareness, say, of a resident of St. Albans that his city played a role in the struggle between the Celts and the Romans. The experience of local history legitimizes that person’s national sense. The identity of small urban communities has always been fundamentally important in Britain. It is based on an experience of the continuity of historical tradition since, say, the Middle Ages. The importance of the distant past, including the medieval past, is a key idea of such reconstructions. The organizers focus on the history of the Anglo-Saxons, on the Norman Conquest. Equally important is the aspect of religious history: the Christian past is a key part of British identity. I am not referring to Anglicanism proper, but to the general Christian tradition, mainly the time when Christianity was established in the British Isles.

Both the Civil War Society of England and the Sealed Knot are societies that reenact battles (some of them fictional) from the Civil War era in England. Many historical reenactment groups exist with the National Association of Reenactment Societies acting as an umbrella organization.

The heyday of the reconstructionist movement came in the period between the two wars. It was no longer the small ancient cities that were involved in this process, but the large cities with significant populations - Birmingham in 1938, Manchester in 1939. These were important industrial centers that were struggling with their present economic crisis.
