Recreating the past for live events, TV and film

Training Services

Although some event managers exhibit a natural flair for their work and appear born to it, it is probably fair to say that most staff or students engaged in event planning and management would benefit from training. Yet until now this has been virtually impossible to buy in or arrange. Now EventPlan can help through an in-house training package designed to suit your particular needs.

During his time within English Heritage, Howard Giles acted as a driving force in event-related training for staff at all levels, from part-time site custodians to the team of event managers themselves. A variety of techniques and material were used. In its most visual form this included Ticket to the Past, an amusing yet very informative EH Education Service video featuring comedian Rowland Rivron and Howard’s team, the latter planning the innovative 1996 History in Action event. This video, combined with lectures and practical exercises, ensured that the majority of EH custodial staff understood the basics of event management. More advanced courses were arranged for other managers.

Howard also wrote EH’s definitive internal events manual, which included his 10 guiding principles for planning a successful event.

However, improved standards in event planning and presentation could not just be confined to staff, for performers had to “buy in” for it to be a success. Howard thus wrote three sets of guidelines for re-enactors and other performers dealing with authenticity and presentation, avoiding damage to archaeological remains, and Health & Safety. These common sense guides were well received to such an extent that they were adopted as standard by a number of groups and, significantly, other agencies such as CADW.
