Bedfont Lakes Country Park, Feltham, West London

Canada, 1759. The French and Indian War has been raging since 1755 (and will continue to do so until 1763). France and Great Britain fight for control of vast lands and natural resources in a series of set-piece battles and bloody frontier skirmishes, both utilising Native Americans and settlers within their armed forces. New France, hamstrung by insufficient manpower or help from home, will eventually succumb to the increasing might of Britain's army and navy.
A frontier skirmish from this war (often termed the first "world" war as it spawned major conflicts in Europe, India and elsewhere around the globe) was fought each day by members of New France and Old England. In this picture, white-coated French regulars engage the British, the photo capturing the split second when a soldier's musket is fired - the priming powder has ignited creating the "flash in the pan", but the main charge down the barrel has yet to go off.
