The Siege of Bolingbroke Castle 1643

360th anniversary re-enactment at Old Bolingbroke, Lincolnshire, Friday 10 to Sunday 12 October 2003

Before the battle each day, Event Director Howard Giles (top right, to the left of the artillery position) led a large number of visitors on a guided tour of the impressive Civil War-era earth fort adjacent to the castle. Part of the Royalist garrison look on in the background, trying to ensure no Parliamentarian spies or sympathisers get too close a look at the defences!

By the C17th, the power of modern artillery had ensured that low-profile earth forts had replaced medieval masonry in state-of-the-art fortifications. It is thought that the earthwork at Bolingbroke Castle was built before the siege in an attempt to protect the obsolete castle walls from close bombardment.
