Recreating the past for live events, TV and film

Multi-period events

There’s no doubt that there is an increasing trend towards multi-period historical events, since these can offer a tremendous variety of themes, action and excitement, all within one show. First developed by Howard Giles when Head of Special Events for English Heritage, they have increased enormously in scope as new groups spring up to fill voids in recreated historical eras. Particularly popular with families, they usually offer something for everybody to enjoy. Being quite complicated, they have however to be carefully planned.

Displays can encompass a wide variety of activities in which battle re-enactment, living history encampments and field fortifications, cavalry, armoured vehicles, aircraft, cooking, music, dance, drama, comedy, exhibitions, historical traders' market and (voluntary) audience participation all play their part.

Although some famous multi-period events like History in Action and the annual Colchester Military Festival have been enormous, multi-periods don't have to be big or expensive to stage, as quality is just as important as quantity. Indeed, we can usually tailor a show to the most modest of venues and budgets. Please contact us for no-obligation details.

We specialise in combining the best use of the ground, historical themes, performing groups, displays and display timetables to produce an unforgettable experience for visitors. In doing so, we aim to provide the “wow” factor of the kind offered by a film epic. If the right ingredients are present, we can do this for you.

Due to performer availability and other factors (for example, the need to avoid clashes with established major single-era displays), there are only a certain number of opportunities a year to stage such events. If you have a suitable venue and would like to be one of the few to stage a one-off or annual multi-period event, either a “spectacular” or perhaps something more modest, now is the time to think about it as the limited number of available weekends is diminishing each year.

EventPlan has staged numerous successful multi-period shows from 2002 to 2006, indeed too many to list here,  although you can find out more by visiting our events past, present and future page, or our 2007 programme. They've always been hugely popular with visitors, and represent perhaps our best-known presentations. Invitations to repeat events certainly prove that our clients like them too!

If you are interested in hosting a multi-period, there are various themes to choose from. For example,

Or, a mixture of these, thus maximising variety and visitor satisfaction! Naturally, it tends to be the big military multi-period shows that tend to pull in the biggest crowds, but smaller is beautiful too! It all depends on your venue and budget - and indeed, you'll probably be delighted with the suggestions we come up with.

EventPlan is probably best known for its quality multi-period shows - why not try us?
