The Performers

Sir John Savile's Household, Sir William Stanley’s Household and The Neville Household are recreating life at the Abbey of Tupholme and it's accompanying village. Abbeys in the 15th century were not isolated structures standing aloof but had become a part of the landscape of England and intimately involved in their local communities. From the craftsmen and women working to create artefacts to the verderers putting meat on the Abbot's table, all had a role. Come and see these people in their daily lives.

The Ringwoods of History present two different aspects of the medieval world. Brother Oswald, a Premonstratensian lay brother, relates his daily monastic life, whilst Matilda of Worksop, a pilgrim and herb woman, talks about the medieval use of herbs and the stories behind the holy shrines.

Brother Justin, another military monk of The Knights Hospitalers, has stopped by at Tupholme Abbey on his way back to his Commandery in North Lincolnshire. It's a happy coincidence that another party of Hospitalers are also visiting the Abbey!  Throughout the day Bro. Justin will be available to talk about the life and activities of the Order and will give  short presentations with an emphasis on child friendly, including participation.

Lance and Hames recreate two mounted military monks of the Knights Hospitaler preparing for war, warming up horses, riding at quintaine with lance, lancing rings off a staff, as well as demonstrating the use of the javalin and lance against a straw soldier puppet, all with running commentary.
