Recreating the past for live events, TV and film
1. The Show
Our spectacular multi-era historical re-enactment forms part of the park's free annual fayre. Arranged by Sheffield City Council, the fayre attracts around 25,000 visitors. Our displays range from the Ancient era to C20th with many performers from numerous groups, combat, living history and other historical displays. It will be a great, entertaining family day out, yet very authentic. And amazingly, it's FREE!
Absolutely. There will be a huge variety of displays and activities to enjoy. As well as the re-enactments (which include have a go activities) there will be lots of other things to see and do. There's a craft fair, fun fair (positioned so as not to impact on the historical shows) and other attractions. More details will be posted up as soon as they are confirmed.
Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday will be the same except for minor differences in battles (one side might win one day and the other the next).
There will be a huge variety of historical displays to enjoy including ongoing living history and many other activities.
Because so much is happening at once, visitors may not able to see everything in one day so might wish to choose what displays they want to see most, or plan to come for both days.
Is it photogenic?
You bet. The displays are designed to look as good as possible. In order not to spoil the view for other visitors, there will be certain viewing (and photography) arrangements in force around the Main Arena (for example, sitting at the front only - no standing near the front to take photos etc).
Sheffield City Council will be producing a programme, available fee on the day.
Yes it is, albeit on a far more modest scale. The Event Director is Howard Giles of EventPlan, who created and until the year 2000 directed the English Heritage events programme. He was responsible for directing (and often scripting & narrating) History in Action in its heyday, from 1996 to 2000, and has done the same at many major events since this.
No they don't, far from it. Our re-enactments are always as authentic as possible and no punches are pulled regarding the horror of war. The re-enactors are deeply committed to both commemorating and honouring the men and women caught up in wars and military action through the ages. By recreating the past, we and the re-enactors hope that their experiences won’t be forgotten, and can be avoided in the future.
However, our battles do not set out to gratuitously shock, so graphic depictions of wounds and injuries are not included, although the narrator does describe them.
Yes it is. The park is situated just south of the city centre, with the main entrance in Norfolk Park Road, off Park Grange Road and Granville Road. Temporary road signs will be arranged by the City Council.
Take the Tram for a quick and easy trip!
Walking: It's only a 10 minute walk from the city centre (and railway station).
3. Admission to the event
Admission is FREE. Pretty amazing, eh?
4. Facilities
Within the topography of the park, yes. although there are sloping areas, there are plenty of flat areas and a circular tarmac path right around the park. Most displays can be viewed from flat ground, although the ground undulated in places.
The attractive modern Centre in the Park offers a variety of facilities including toilets (including disabled), cafe, children's area and information. Additionally, all the usual facilities for an outdoor event will be available - catering, refreshments, 1st Aid and portaloos. Numerous stewards & the police will be on duty.
Are picnics allowed?
Yes. But we
also have a variety of catering available on site. Visitors are asked to take
their litter home
or place them in the bins provided, to help keep the park tidy (and safe for small animals and birds).
Is there overnight camping?
We regret that there is no visitor camping or caravan spaces, or overnight facilities. If you would like to camp in the area, please refer to Sheffield Tourist Information Centre (0114 221 1900) for details of the nearest camp sites.
Re-enactors will be camping in period tents or, by prior arrangement through their society in a participants-only modern camping area. As the latter is limited we ask all those participants able to camp "in period" to do so.
How do I find out about local accommodation?
Sheffield Tourist Information Centre (number above) can send you a comprehensive guide by post or give information over the telephone. They also offer a free reservations service.
EventPlan will send full advance details to all participating groups for distribution to members.
We are re-enactors/ or (eg) a country & western club. Can we take part?
Participation is by invitation only but we do welcome applications from any groups wishing to take part. At this stage, new invitations can only be offered to those groups that do not require modern camping space and can meet our Standard terms and conditions for participation.
Traders
EventPlan invite quality historical traders/demonstrators to take part. Please read trading opportunities and then contact us if you would like to participate.
6. More information
We shall post up more information as further details of the event are confirmed. In the meantime we hope that you will put the show into your diary and that we'll see you at the Sheffield Fayre 2006!
