The English Heritage Special Events Unit, 1988

Coral, Howard and Helen (aka Peeps), the Special Events Unit in 1988.

Pictured at a wet and windy event at Monk Bretton Priory on 1-2 May 1988, the then small team consists of Coral Sealey (left), Howard Giles (centre) and Helen Christou (right).

Throughout the years, the Special Events Unit was blessed with a hard-working team of talented professionals who, despite resources that never quite matched need, produced a consistently well-received and ever-growing events programme.

Apart from Howard, in post from 1984 to 2000, Coral was the longest serving member of the team, from 1984 through to 1999. Helen was a much valued member of the team for a number of years, before moving to Cyprus in 1990. Karen Cooper was an important part of the team from 1989 to 1996, whilst Thomas Cardwell joined in 1990 and remained until early 2003. Jane Dobre and Natasha Lees served as Event Managers from the mid to late 90s.

Reflecting reorganisations within English Heritage, the once tight-knit unit was regionalised and so effectively disbanded in 2003.
