Dockyard 800

Some frequently asked questions

1. The Show

What's it all about then?

A high quality multi-period historical show, staged on behalf of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, interpreting the history of the dockyard through the ages.  Enjoy living history and displays at  this very famous location . It's the first time this event has been held, and both the management and EventPlan hope to establish it as an annual attraction.

Is the event suitable for families and small children?

Absolutely. There will be a wide variety of displays and activities to enjoy.

Is the show the same each day?

Yes it is, but do try to come on Saturday as you might enjoy it so much that you'll want to come back on the Sunday! With the dockyard's permanent attractions fully open too, there's a huge variety of things to see and do - too much for just one day in fact!.

Is it photogenic?

Yes. Photography is restricted in one or two areas (for example, it is not allowed on board HMS Victory) but otherwise, click away!!!

Will there be a programme?

The dockyard will be producing a free programme, so you'll know exactly what's happening, where and when!

2. Getting there

Is Portsmouth Historic Dockyard easy to find?

Yes it is, please see the main event page for directions. Please note that parking is off-site, although there are numerous car parks to choose from.

3. Admission to the event

4. Facilities

Is the event disabled-friendly?

The dockyard is flat, so suitable for most disabled visitors. Some living history areas are however located on board ship so care should be taken when visiting them.

What facilities are available?

Plenty of catering, toilets and shops will be available.

Is there overnight camping?

We regret that there is no camping or overnight facilities on site, as this is a fully functional naval base. If you would like to camp in the area, please refer to the local Tourist Information Centre for details of the nearest camp sites.

Re-enactors and performers will be camping close by.
