Remembering the Soviet war effort: A staggering 25 million Soviet soldiers and civilians died in the war. None the less, Russian's titanic war effort resulted in over 100 German divisions being destroyed, including the cream of Hitler's army. Without the war in the East, D-Day and the liberation of Western Europe would probably not been possible for years.
