In 2005, EventPlan was commissioned to create, develop, script and direct the Roman Army and Chariot Experience in the ancient chariot racing hippodrome at Jerash, Jordan. This drew on Howard Giles' extensive experience in carrying out similar work in the UK, notably for the Battle of Orgreave in 2001.
The fascinating project lasted several months and involved training participants (most ex-Jordanian army, special forces and Police) as an impressive unit of armoured Roman Legionaries and as seen here, fearsome gladiators. Military drill, manoeuvres, gladiatorial combat and chariot racing were all integrated into a thrilling show, viewed from the stone seats of the remarkably well-preserved hippodrome.
It was wonderful to be instrumental in bringing this stunning ancient site to life again after nearly 2000 years, culminating in an initial show in front of members of the Jordanian royal family.
