Roman chariot racing, gladiatorial combat and legionary soldiers - living history - static displays and more!
We regret that this event has had to be cancelled by our client following the credit-crunch related withdrawal of their main sponsor
Come
and enjoy a fantastic weekend of Roman themed events staged by EventPlan
on behalf of
Snake in the
Grass Limited in the superb
setting of Lower castle Park - right next to the Roman city wall and a javelin's
throw from the Castle (which is famously built on the foundations of the Temple
of Claudius). The show includes;
- Thrilling chariot racing staged by Horses Impossible
- Full on Gladiatorial combat by Britannia (who will also be sailing their Roman boat on the adjacent river)
- Impressive military displays by armoured Roman legionaries, auxiliaries and artillerymen of The Ermine Street Guard and Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix
- Early
Roman cavalrymen and military mule with
History Horse,
and Late Roman cavalryman portrayed by
Nigel Applerley of
Legio Secunda Augusta.
- Wacky Roman entertainment - including Queen Boudicca's revolt refought with vegetables! - by Ancient Wisdom
- Living history and everyday life by The Colchester Roman Society
- Roman cookery by Sally Grainger
- Roman children's games and have a go activities to enjoy with Heuristics, who will also be presenting aspects of Roman life including: Surveying and measuring – simple equipment put to incredible good use – you have even travelled here today using some of it; Cosmetics – what lengths would the Roman woman go for the sake of her beauty – (and what price will Iden pay for not allowing Cardia a slave); Hydraulics and pneumatics – some of the earliest inventions – a water clock from 250BC, and a fountain that defies gravity.
